This is the most famous hotel in Hawai

Famed for its lush coastline, an endless supply of warm rays and world-class waves that march to shore and lure surfers year-round (particularly in the winter months, when the swells are bigger and the stakes higher), Oahu – the most iconic of the Hawaiian islands – is both a postcard landscape and a prized natural jewel that commands respect.

Since the early 20th century, people have flocked to Oahu to sample the Aloha spirit and escape the daily grind. As such, some of the most luxurious and contemporary hotels are nestled within the Hawaiian island chain. And the most iconic of them all is Oahu’s Royal Hawaiian Hotel, known colloquially as ‘The Pink Palace of the Pacific’.

Situated right on the Waikiki beachfront in the tourist mecca of Honolulu, the Royal Hawaiian is a giant, fairy floss-coloured, Spanish-influenced luxury landmark, surrounded by a sea of green palms and an actual sea – the turquoise blue Pacific – and is as much a part of the Waikiki skyline as nearby Diamond Head crater.

The striking hotel was built back in 1927 (one of the first hotels to be constructed on Oahu) and represented the height of luxury, featuring 400 rooms with balconies overlooking the sea, surrounded by 15 acres of landscaped tropical greens.

It’s no surprise that it was quickly adopted as the Hawaiian home to the rich and famous, hosting everyone from Clark Gable to The Beatles, Joan Didion and was the honeymoon hideaway for Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio.

You might recognise the Pink Palace from such TV shows as Mad Men (it now offers a VIP Draper package featuring a personalised concierge service and four nights in the King Kamehameha Suite), or as the hotel in 2002’s Punch Drunk Love where Adam Sandler passionately reunites with Emily Watson in the hotel’s grand arched lobby.

Today, it’s more of a symbol of a bygone era, which, if anything, adds to it’s appeal. The place exudes romance, so it’s likely you’ll be sharing the hotel with a cavalcade of loved-up newlyweds should you choose to stay here. And considering you can walk from the hotel gardens right onto Waikiki beach, it’s top-tier so far as prime locations go.

Even if you don’t choose to stay at the Royal Hawaiian, a visit to the hotel’s chequered terrace is a must for all travellers to Oahu. Grab a cocktail, sink into a chair and let the retro vibes of the Pink Palace pull you back in time for an afternoon. Pastel polo and Clubmasters optional.

These are the best (and worst) celebrity travel partners

The results are in!

We know Aussies are a decisive lot when it comes to travel planning and preparation, and it seems that that also stands when it comes to choice of travel partner.

As you may have seen in the media we asked over 1,000 Australian travellers to tell us who they would love to join them on a trip, and who they’d rather stayed at home as far away as possible – and they didn’t hold back!

BEST TRAVEL PARTNERS

Topping the list for dream travel companions on a global scale were Prince Harry and Kate Middleton, whereas closer to home actors Hugh Jackman and Rebel Wilson were chosen as dream partners for Australian travelers.

Actress and UN ambassador Angelina Jolie Pitt was third in the global list (10.2%) after Harry and Kate (15.2% and 10.8% respectively), with U.S. singers Taylor Swift and Katy Perry completing the top five (8.9% and 8.0% respectively).

After Hugh Jackman and Rebel Wilson (17.9% & 6.1%), diminutive pop star Kylie Minogue (5.8%), radio star Hamish Blake (5.4%) and Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (4.9%) completed the top five list of Australian stars they’d most like to travel with.

WORST TRAVEL PARTNERS

On the other end of the scale, wild child Miley Cyrus (9.0%) and Caitlin Jenner (6.4%) followed Justin Bieber (27%), Kim Kardashian (20.7%) and Kanye West (10.9%) in the list of the global stars Australians they’d least like to travel with – the Kardashian family’s high maintenance and media presence perhaps to blame for voter fatigue.

Taking the Aussie top spot for all the wrong reasons, KIIS FM Breakfast presenter Kyle Sandilands (23%) was named the least favourite Australian travel partner, followed by cricketer turned socialite Shane Warne (8.2%) and model and reality TV star Lara Bingle (6.7%) – herself a former face of Tourism Australia (famous for the ‘Where the bloody hell are you?’ adverts of 2006).

Today Show presenter Karl Stefanovic’s recent live streak did little for his case – he was named fourth worst companion (5.9%) whilst recent outbursts from tennis star Nick Kyrgios put him in fifth in the list of shamed Australians (5.6%).

DESTINATION INSPIRATION

When it came to favoured destinations for next holidays, Hawaii topped the list for Australians, ahead of the Gold Coast and Thailand (37.7%, 17.5% and 12% respectively).

A guide to the world’s most iconic hotels

These are the hotels that you’ve seen in the movies and heard about in stories. They’ve played host to some of the most famous, beautiful, powerful and notorious people in history.

1. The Plaza, New York City

This fabled Art Deco behemoth that sits at the prestigious corner of 5th Avenue and Central Park has played host to some of the most legendary lodgers imaginable making it – arguably – the most iconic hotel in the world.

How it achieves Icon Status: F. Scott Fitzgerald lived at the Plaza for a time, and he and wife Zelda once famously took a late night dip in the hotel’s Pulitzer fountain. Definitive American architect Frank Lloyd Wright also once called it home. Miles Davis recorded a live album there. Visitors throughout the ages include presidents, kings, queens, stars of stage, screen and everything in between. The Plaza’s hallowed halls have made several cinematic cameos appearing in everything from Hitchcock’s North by Northwest to The Way We Were to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. A bone fide star of the hotel world.

2. The Savoy, London

London’s The Savoy does not only have a reputation for the buoyantly elegant, but it’s locale in relation to the Thames is such that it’s practically floating, rubbing shoulders with Covent Garden and within a stone’s throw from the National Portrait Gallery and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

How it achieves Icon Status: The Savoy was the first luxury hotel to be built in Britain so comes with an ongoing history chapter. The American Bar was headed up by legendary bartender Harry Craddock, who wrote the first edition of definitive cocktail compendium The Savoy Cocktail Book. The original chef of the Savoy Room (now Savoy Grill) Auguste Escoffier was inspired to create the Peach Melba and Melba Toast for Australian opera star Nellie Melba. Monet painted views of The Thames from his room as the hotel’s first artist-in-residence in the early 1900s and Oscar Wilde was a tenant during his obscenity trial. The hotel’s Lancaster room featured in the movie Notting Hill for the scene where Hugh Grant’s character interrupts a press conference to declare his love for Julia Roberts’ movie star.
Christian Dior presenting a collection at The Savoy in 1950.

3. The Beverly Hills Hotel, LA

In its distinctive Mediterranean revivalist style the ‘Pink Palace’ and the curling typography on its façade are one of the most noteworthy sites along the legendary Sunset Boulevard strip.

How it achieves Icon Status: In addition to its famously accommodating hospitality (the concierge can reportedly procure tickets to “anything” happening in LA for its paying customers) and its greenery-ensconced private bungalows being exceptionally maintained, the Beverly Hills Hotel has hosted a revolving string of showbiz legends from Marilyn Monroe to John Lennon and Yoko Ono, to Steven Spielberg and various members of the Kardashian family. The hotel starred on the cover of The Eagles’ most famous ode to hedonism “Hotel California”, further adding to its mystique.

4. Raffles, Singapore

Hands down the most iconic building – let alone hotel – in Singapore.

How it achieves Icon Status: Raffles’ institution, Long Bar, is the home of the Singapore Sling, a favourite cocktail of great literati including Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham. Postmodernist Japanese writer Ryu Murakami was inspired to write a novel named after the hotel concerning a love affair between a photographer and famous actress that takes place within its colonial-style beams.

5. The Waldorf Astoria, New York City

An enduring icon of grand Art Deco design with a style and service that still smacks of old-school New York.

How it achieves Icon Status: Ever had Eggs Benedict at brunch? It’s said to have been invented at the Waldorf by famed maitre d’ Oscar Tschirky, who’s also credited with creating the Waldorf salad (later referenced by jazz composer Cole Porter in “You’re The Top”). Marilyn Monroe lived in the Waldorf’s Suite after leaving Hollywood, and Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and US president Herbert Hoover were all full-time tenants once upon a time.

6. The Bellagio, Las Vegas

This behemoth of the Strip has maintained a balance of over-the-top opulence and spectacle with taste – a rarity for Vegas hotels, particularly among the other mainstay resorts along the Strip.

How it achieves Icon Status: It was cast as a star in 2001 heist movie Ocean’s Eleven including cameos by the property’s Gallery of Fine Art (that’s where Julia Roberts spends her day gazing at masterpieces) and the Fountains of Bellagio where the Ocean’s ensemble reconvenes to watch the symphonic fountain dance spectacularly to Debussy’s Clair de Lune.

7. Sunset Marquis, Los Angeles

The rock and roll answer that adds some requisite edge to the class and luxury of all the above, the Sunset Marquis might have seen better days but like any ageing rocker worth their salt, it’s got better stories than anyone else.

How it achieves Icon Status: The hotel, once a haven to rock stars, supermodels, fashion designers and astroturf is  comes complete with a recording studio where the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, Slash and Jeff Beck have recorded material. The Clash, the Ramones and Blondie were patrons in their hey days. Rockers Courtney Love and Nine Inch Nail’s frontman Trent Reznor engaged in an ill-fated affair. Keith Moon drove a motorcycle through the lobby. If those walls could talk…

12 Iconic Travel Locations Made Famous by Hollywood

One of the best ways to fill your travel itinerary? Look to Hollywood for inspiration. Here are some of the most spectacular spots made famous for playing the backdrop to your favourite films.

1. Phi Phi Islands

Movie/s: The Beach

Stay: Villa 360, Phi Phi Island

Thailand’s dreamy island archipelago off the coast near Phuket – and more specifically, the island of Ko Phi Phi Lee and Maya Bay – is a tourist hotspot for being Leonardo DiCaprio’s breathtaking secret island cove in the 2000 film adaptation of Alex Garland’s adventure novel, The Beach. Though the beach is partially hidden within one of the coast’s jungle-like archipelagos, you won’t be hard pressed scoring a lift out there – many boats offer day trips to Ko Phi Phi and a swag of other dreamy islands for a small fee.

2. New Zealand

Movie/s: Lord of the Rings

Stay: Evergreen Lodge, Queenstown

With its rolling green hills, steep snow-capped mountains, barren volcanic plains and a wealth of other Instagram-worthy natural landscapes, New Zealand was an obvious choice as fictional realm Middle Earth for Peter Jackson’s epic three-part Tolkien fantasy flick, Lord of the Rings.

3. Bernese Alps

Movie/s: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

Stay: Hotel Eiger Swiss Q, Muerren

What better place to plant 007 and his swathe of adventurous cronies than a panoramic lair atop one of Switzerland’s highest peaks? The Schilthorn, in the breathtaking Bernese Alps, played host to Bond for the 1969 spy flick, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (starring one-time Australian 007, George Lazenby). To this day, there are several homages to James Bond enroute to the Schilthorn summit, including cut-outs of Lazenby for happy snaps and the Bond theme being played before you exit the cable car. Slightly corny? Yes – though the view is anything but.

4. Alaska

Movie/s: Into the Wild

Stay: Best Western Country Lane Inn, Juneau

While the film based on Jon Krakauer’s 1996 book about young adventurer Christopher McCandless showed off some of America’s most astonishing landscapes – from Lake Tahoe to Oregon, South Dakota, the Grand Canyon and Slab City, the notorious squatters utopia in the Californian desert – all paled in comparison to the striking backdrop of the Alaskan wilderness, where the real McCandless saw out his days in an abandoned bus. A monument to McCandless’ adventurous spirit, which stands as a hiker’s attraction to this day.

5. Tokyo

Movie/s: Lost in Translation

Stay: Park Hyatt, Tokyo (the hotel from the movie)

Along with shoe-horning Suntory whisky into the sub-conscious of everyone who saw the movie (“For a relaxing time, make it Suntory time”), the 2003 film about an ageing Hollywood star (Bill Murray) who sparks a pseudo-relationship with a young expat (Scarlett Johansson) showed off the never-sleeping buzz, weird and eccentricity of Japan’s capital. And its delicious whisky.

6. Oregon

Movie/s: Wild

Stay: Hotel Modera, Portland

Like Into the Wild, this flick starring Reese Witherspoon as American novelist Cheryl Strayed highlights the breathtaking surrounds of the Pacific Crest Trail, but in much more depth and cinematic beauty. Try watching Witherspoon trekking through Oregon’s ultra-lush forest vistas and not want to impulse-book a flight to America’s northwest.

7. Ischia

Movie/s: The Talented Mr. Ripley

Stay: Miramare Sea Resort, Ischia

Yes, Matt Damon is a stage five clinger in this iconic thriller – but don’t let that stop you from getting lost in dreams of traipsing through beach umbrellas and sipping on aperitifs under the hot Mediterranean sun on the relaxing Italian island of Ischia, where the movie was filmed.

8. Jordan

Movie/s: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade; Lawrence of Arabia

Stay: Intercontinental, Amman

Already an iconic landscape to begin with for its archaeological roots, Jordan’s historic ‘Lost City’ of Petra was used as the backdrop for Harrison Ford escaping imminent doom in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Nearby, the seemingly never-ending desert plains of Jordan (from Aqaba right to Wadi Rum) was where the iconic Lawrence of Arabia was filmed.

9. Monument Valley

Movie/s: Back to the Future Part III, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Forrest Gump

Stay: Holiday Inn, Cortez

On the desert end of the United States, no expanse has been used more to portray a striking, dry and barren landscape than Colorado’s Monument Valley. From Doc Brown and Marty McFly’s epic train chase escapade in Back to the Future Part III, to the setting for holiday hijinks in National Lampoon’s Family Vacation, Monument Valley is a prized jewel in Hollywood’s location crown.

10. Angkor Wat

Movie/s: Tomb Raider

Stay: Pacific Hotel, Siem Reap

Sure, it wasn’t the most gripping movie – and when you’re dealing with a video-game adaptation of a wealthy, ass-kicking archaeologist with a penchant for wearing uncomfortably small items of clothing during combat, nobody expected it to be. But it did manage to reveal Angkor Wat’s beauty in the way of Ta Prohm – a breathtaking ancient Cambodian temple built in the late 12th century.

11. Alnwick Castle

Movie/s: Harry Potter

Stay: Royal Station Hotel, Northumberland

With its jutting turrets and expansive lush grounds, Britain’s giant Alnwick Castle was the ideal filming location to portray a magical realm in the first two Harry Potter films. Fans of TVs period drama Downton Abbey might also recognise Alnwick as ground zero for the show.

12. Salzburg

Movie/s: The Sound of Music

Stay: Arthotel Blaue Gans, Salzburg

Anyone who’s travelled through Austria’s sweeping green mountains can attest that the hills really are alive – and the most iconic of those spots to visit is the Alps city of Salzburg, where The Sound of Music was originally filmed.

Hawaii is a land full of hidden gems and incredible cultural experiences, to help you find the best of the best we spoke to 6 of Hawaii’s local experts for their views on the places not to miss as well as where to get off the beaten track to help you plan your next stay.

Here we highlight our top 10 best places to explore taken from the full interviews with our local experts below:

1. Hottest restaurant at the moment – MW, Honolulu

“Although the sophisticated restaurant has become known for its modern take on Hawaii Regional Cuisine, I always recommend them because of their stellar desserts. Some people even go to MW just to do a multi-course dessert tasting. It’s that good. While you’re there, try the MW Candy bar with a macadamia nut-praline crunch, salted caramel, and Waialua chocolate. ” Coty of Exploration Hawaii

2. Best beach bar – Dukes, Waikiki

“The bar is located in the heart of Waikiki and is wildly popular with locals and tourists alike. The drink menu is vast and the atmosphere is like no other.” Jeremy of Beyond Honolulu

3. Most popular hotel – Grand Wailea Waldorf Astoria, Maui

“The property itself is beautiful from top to bottom, and they have so many amazing water features that people from other hotels try to sneak in just to try them. Their spa, with several salt pools and massage waterfalls, is one of the most unique. I also love that they have many Hawaiian cultural activities on property so that visitors can learn about true Hawaii traditions in an interactive way. Try their signature restaurant, Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, for a delicious sunset dinner.” Melissa from Frolic Hawaii

4. Best hidden gem beach – Lanikai Beach, windward coast of Oahu

“The water is crystal clear and amazing for snorkelling and kayaking. Two other favourites are Waimea Bay on the North Shore and Cromwells Beach in town — a hidden gem for locals.” Emma from the Aloha Babe.

5. Best surfing beach – Sunset Beach, North Shore of Oahu

“..two most popular places to surf (both locally and worldwide) are Sunset Beach (Pipeline) on the North Shore of Oahu, and world famous “Jaws” on Maui. Both offer incredible surfing experiences and both are very dangerous and famous, bringing the best surfers from around the world.” Jeremy of Beyond Honolulu.

6. Best shopping – Ala Moana Center, Waikiki

“Ala Moana Center is the largest shopping centre in Hawaii, and the world’s largest outdoor shopping centre. They have hundreds of retailers, including department stores and Hawaii-based retailers.” Gem from Hawaii Mom Blog

7. Best hiking – Kuliouou Ridge Trail, Honolulu

“Think that the view from Hawaii’s beaches is great? Imagine the view from a few thousand feet high above.”  Coty from Exploration Hawaii

8. Best festival – Lantern Floating Festival, Oahu’s South shore

“The biggest and most popular annual event in Hawaii is the yearly Lantern Floating Festival held every Memorial Day. The event garners 40,000 – 50,000 people yearly and is watched by hundreds of thousands more online from Hawaii and Japan.” Jeremy from Beyond Honolulu

9. Best off the beaten track destination –  Molokai

“The least developed island in Hawaii, Molokai is the perfect off-the-beaten track destination. There are no upscale resorts, no high-end restaurants, no stoplights, no shopping malls or McDonald’s. But it does offer empty white-sand beaches, hikes through native forests, and complete relaxation.” Catherine from the Cat Dish.

10. Best offbeat attraction – Papakolea Beach (Green Sand Beach), Big Island of Hawaii

“Truth be told, the islands of Hawaii are full of “off the beaten path” destinations that tourists have no idea even exist. Each island has several, but one that stands out is located on the Big Island (Hawaii Island). Papakolea, or Green Sand Beach, is located at the southern tip, just west of south point. The green sand is actually caused by past volcano eruptions.” Jeremy from Beyond Honolulu.

1. What’s Hawaii’s best off the beaten track destination/attraction?

Those looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure should definitely look mauka (Hawaiian for “toward the mountains”). Hawaii is home to an amazing collection of ridge trails ripe for hiking. Think that the view from Hawaii’s beaches is great? Imagine the view from a few thousand feet high above. My recommendation would be to check out Kuliouou Ridge Trail on Oahu…the views of the Windward Coast are simply stunning.

2. Where can you find the best hidden gem beaches in Hawaii?

You’ll definitely want to step out of Waikiki for the best beaches in Hawaii. If on Oahu, I’d suggest just driving along the North Shore until you find a spot you like. Of course, iconic Waimea Bay is a popular beach for world class surfers and beachgoers alike. It can also get very crowded, so check out Haleiwa Beach Park to hang loose with locals and for a chance to spot a sunbathing honu (Hawaiian for turtle). Just past Waimea Bay is Shark’s Cove, a wonderful place for snorkelling and a great alternative to the busy Hanauma Bay on the east side. During the winter, the North Shore is a bit too rough to be enjoyable for the casual swimmer. Instead, drive over to Kailua and enjoy the soft sand and clear waters at Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai Beach. I’d also recommend renting a kayak so that you can paddle out to the two small islands (Mokulua Islands) that you can see from both Kailua and Lanikai Beach.

3. What’s the hottest restaurant in Hawaii at the moment?

Two letters, MW. Founders and husband and wife duo, Michelle Karr-Ueoka and Wade Ueoka, opened their restaurant a little over two years ago. Although the sophisticated restaurant has become known for its modern take on Hawaii Regional Cuisine, I always recommend them because of their stellar desserts. Some people even go to MW just to do a multi-course dessert tasting. It’s that good. While you’re there, try the MW Candy bar with a macadamia nut-praline crunch, salted caramel, and Waialua chocolate.

5. What are the most exciting annual events in Hawaii?

The Honolulu Festival has been a signature event in Hawaii for more than twenty years. People from all over the world come to experience the many cultural performances spread throughout this weekend long event. If you enjoy food, then you’ve got to check out the annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival, the premier epicurean event in the Pacific. Over 100 internationally-renowned master chefs embark on the islands every year to partake in the festival, many of whom are James Beard Award-winning chefs.

6. What’s your favourite hotel/resort in Hawaii and why?

I’d have to go with the Grand Wailea Resort on Maui. The hospitality is amazing, sunsets from the pool are spectacular, and their luxurious Spa Grande is a world class retreat for those looking for pampering and relaxation. The five Hawaiian sea salt baths are a must try for those who decide to stay at the Grand Wailea and indulge at Spa Grande.

1. Where can you find Hawaii’s best shopping?

I always love supporting our local boutiques and you can find tons of great things and pieces by Hawaii-based designers, too. Bamboo Sky, The Butik and Fighting Eel are a few that come to mind.

2. Where can you find the best beaches in Hawaii?

My favorite beach on Oahu is definitely Lanikai Beach. The water is crystal clear and amazing for snorkeling and kayaking. Two other favorites are Waimea Bay on the North Shore and Cromwells Beach in town — a hidden gem for locals.

3. What’s the best restaurant in Hawaii at the moment?

For fine dining, Alan Wong’s can’t be beat. They specialize in asian fusion cuisine and I highly recommend the ginger crusted onaga if you’re a fish lover like me. Other hot spots to try are The Pig & the Lady, Lucky Belly and MW Restaurant — don’t leave without trying their desserts!

4. Where can you find the best nighlife in Hawaii?

If you’re looking for great nightlife, I would recommend heading into Waikiki. The Modern Honolulu hotel has a great bar in the lobby called The Study, and a nightclub called Addiction that are popular on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Rumfire in The Sheraton Waikiki is another fun beachside bar to stop by.

5. What’s your favourite hotel/resort in Hawaii and why?

I recently stayed at The Modern Honolulu and had a fantastic time. It’s chic and perfect for it you want to stay just outside the hustle and bustle of central Waikiki.

6. Anything you would like to add?

Whenever anyone is visiting Hawaii for the first time, I always tell them to try authentic Hawaiian food. Some of the absolute best Hawaiian food can be found at Helena’s Hawaiian Food and Ono Hawaiian Foods.

1. What’s Hawaii’s best off the beaten track destination/attraction?

Truth be told, the islands of Hawaii are full of “off the beaten path” destinations that tourists have no idea even exist. Each island has several, but one that stands out is located on the Big Island (Hawaii Island). Papakolea, or Green Sand Beach, is located at the southern tip, just west of south point. The green sand is actually caused by past volcano eruptions. It is off the beaten path for sure. To get to the area you have to either have a 4 wheel drive or you have to hike for 2.5 miles.

2. Where can you find the best surfing in Hawaii?

Hawaii is littered full of some of the world’s best surfing, but it is hard to argue that the two most popular places to surf (both locally and worldwide) are Sunset Beach (Pipeline) on the North Shore of Oahu, and world famous “Jaws” on Maui. Both offer incredible surfing experiences and both are very dangerous and famous, bringing the best surfers from around the world.

3. What’s the hottest restaurant in Hawaii at the moment?

Much like anywhere else restaurants come and go fairly quickly in Hawaii. However, one that has actually caught on and stuck around is called 12th Ave Grill. The restaurant has become so popular that it was awarded the Hale Aina Award for “Restaurant of the Year” in Hawaii.

4. What’s your pick of the best bar in Hawaii and why?

There are three that stand out… Duke’s on the Beach, Mai Tai Bar and Murphy’s Bar and Grill. They all bring a unique experience but of the three Duke’s on the Beach takes the prize. The bar is located in the heart of Waikiki and is wildly popular with locals and tourists alike. The drink menu is vast and the atmosphere is like no other.

5. What is Hawaii’s hottest annual event?

When you look at hot annual events in Hawai’i you have to look at it from a different perspective. It isn’t a concert or a party, it is more a culturally based event that is hugely popular in Hawaii. While Hawaii does host the Sony Open Golf Tourney which is very popular, as well as the Honolulu Festival…. The biggest and most popular annual event in Hawaii is the yearly Lantern Floating Festival held every Memorial Day. The event garners 40,000 – 50,000 people yearly and is watched by hundreds of thousands more online from Hawaii and Japan.

6. What’s your favourite hotel/resort in Hawaii and why?

The Grand Wailea on Maui. The Grand Wailea is a Waldorf Astoria Resort and provides the best of everything for its customers. It has 780 rooms, has the best pool in all of Hawaii, one of the best spas in the entire nation, and is located next to one of the most beautiful beaches in the United States. Combine all that with golf, a huge gym and modern luxury around every corner and the Grand Walilea on Maui is definitely my favorite.

7. Anything you would like to add?

Hawaii is one of those places that stays the same, yet changes. The vibe and laid back Aloha that the islands provide is always there, yet the types of places that are popular in Hawaii are ever changing (with a few exceptions). The amount of hidden gems scattered throughout the Hawaiian Islands are almost endless, but if you have time and are willing to travel outside of Waikiki you will make incredible memories that will last a lifetime.

1. What’s Hawaii’s best off-the-beaten track destination/attraction?

The least developed island in Hawaii, Molokai is the perfect off-the-beaten track destination. There are no upscale resorts, no high-end restaurants, no stoplights, no shopping malls or McDonald’s. But it does offer empty white-sand beaches, hikes through native forests, and complete relaxation.

2. Where can you find the best hiking in Hawaii?

As Stuart Ball wrote in “The Hiker’s Guide to Oahu,” a must-read for anyone visiting the Islands with plans to hike, “Oahu is truly a paradise for hikers.” There are more than 80 vastly different and accessible trails on this island — along windswept ridges, through lush valleys and native forests, to cascading waterfalls. The island boasts a variety of day hikes for every level, from the paved path along the rugged southeastern coastline to the Makapu‘u Lighthouse to the steep, difficult climb to the tallest summit on O‘ahu, Mount Ka‘ala, at 4,026 feet on the island’s west side.

3. What’s the hottest restaurant in Hawaii at the moment?

The buzz around The Pig and the Lady, a critically acclaimed family-run restaurant in the gentrified Chinatown district in Honolulu, has only grown since it opened in late 2013. The Le family serves up a contemporary, street-style spin on traditional Vietnamese fare that has evolved from a farmer’s market stand to a bricks-and-mortar restaurant, with a chef recently nominated for a James Beard Award. You can’t go wrong with any of the noodle dishes and the Laotian fried chicken with pickled chiles is a must-not-miss.

4. What’s your favourite beach in Hawaii?

While nearby Lanikai Beach gets most of the attention, Kailua Beach offers that same Instagram-worthy white-sand beach with half the crowd. Stretching two miles, this beach offers surfing, swimming, diving, parasailing and kiteboarding. You can kayak to a couple of offshore islets or just lounge on the powdery soft sand and read.

 5. What’s your favourite hotel/resort in Hawaii and why?

There are so many great resorts in Hawaii, from the secluded Kahala Hotel & Resort that’s just minutes from bustling Waikiki to the all-inclusive Travaasa Hana in the remote town on the eastern coastline of Maui. But I really love the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka‘apulehu on Hawaii Island. It boast intimate two-story bungalows — with an outdoor shower on the lower levels — open-air living spaces and luxurious amenities including an incredible spa. It’s a splurge, for sure!

6. Anything you would like to add?

Most people don’t realise Hawaii has a winery — and a good one at that! MauiWine is Maui’s only winery and the state’s oldest, in business for 40 years. It recently hired an up-and-coming winemaker, Brett Miller, from Oregon who’s taken the vints to the next level. The winery, located at ‘Ulupalakua Ranch in Upcountry Maui offers tours and tastings near its vineyards. Worth visiting!

1. Where can you find the best hidden gem beaches in Hawaii?

Some of my favorites are on the North Shore of Oahu. They aren’t as crowded as the ones in town or Kailua, despite being very popular. The only time you need to be careful is in the winter, when the waves are huge and can be dangerous!

2. What’s the hottest restaurant in Hawaii at the moment?

There are a few. One is Migrant Maui in Wailea, since Sheldon Simeon is the chef there. He was a finalist and a fan favorite in Top Chef a couple of years ago, and people want to see what his style of cooking — elevated Filipino — is all about. Another is MW Restaurant on Oahu, named after owner/chefs Michelle and Wade Ueoka. They have a young, fresh approach to their food, but they’ve been at it for almost 20 years. Their desserts are to die for.

3. What’s your pick of the best bar in Hawaii and why?

Many people will steer you to hotel bars, which have nice cocktails, but you’ll find some of the best cocktails in Wang Chung’s, a karaoke bar hidden in a back street in Waikiki. Aside from a regular full bar, owner Danny Chang has spirits that he’s infused himself with local fruits, herbs and spices. The cocktails made with those spirits have cheeky names to poke at Chang’s Asian heritage, like my favorite Ho-Chi-tini, or more raunchy names like the popular whore-chata. He also makes homemade ginger beer.

4. What’s your favourite hotel/resort in Hawaii and why?

You have to see the Grand Wailea on Maui. The property itself is beautiful from top to bottom, and they have so many amazing water features that people from other hotels try to sneak in just to try them. Their spa, with several salt pools and massage waterfalls, is one of the most unique. I also love that they have many Hawaiian cultural activities on property so that visitors can learn about true Hawaii traditions in an interactive way. Try their signature restaurant, Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, for a delicious sunset dinner.

5. Anything you would like to add?
Everyone knows that Kona coffee is the best in the world. But did you know about Ka’u coffee, Kona’s sexier younger sister? The Ka’u Coffee Festival happens every year at the southernmost part of the Big Island at the end of April/beginning of May and at this writing, is still very much a hidden gem. You can taste some of the world’s best coffee brewed different ways, buy local food, watch local entertainment and experience a slice of a different kind of life in Hawaii.

1. What’s Hawaii’s best family friendly destination/attraction?

Kualoa (Oahu). Located on the Windward side of Oahu, Kualoa offers a variety of tours to choose from that are in line with their mission of preserving the area while being able to share the history and natural beauty with visitors. Tours include the Ocean Voyage Tour, Jungle Expedition Tour, ATV Tours, Horseback Tours, and more!

2. Where can you find the best hidden gem beaches in Hawaii?

I haven’t discovered any true “hidden gem” beaches, but Kokololio Beach (Oahu) is a gem in the sense that it is an absolutely beautiful beach, but it doesn’t get as crowded as the more popular beaches around the island.

3. What’s the best restaurant in Hawaii at the moment?

On Oahu, one of the best restaurants is MW Restaurant. A husband and wife team runs this fairly new restaurant, which offers delectable dishes and creative desserts that keep guests coming back for more.

4. Where can you find the best shopping in Hawaii?

Ala Moana Center (Oahu). Ala Moana Center is the largest shopping center in Hawaii, and the world’s largest outdoor shopping center. They have hundreds of retailers, including department stores and Hawaii-based retailers.

5. What’s your favourite family friendly hotel/resort in Hawaii and why?

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Ka`upulehu. They have an awesome keiki pool which my middle son declared “the best pool ever,” an Ohana Suite complete with bean bag chairs, Xbox, and a telescope, a Kids for All Seasons program, and Hale Kula – a room offering video games, toys, and more!

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Tasmania is one of Australia’s more humble treasures. It offers many unique and world-class experiences, which relatively few travellers prioritise (international and domestic). On the plus side, this means Tasmania is a place where you can really “escape” and enjoy authentic local experiences, which haven’t been tarnished by commercial tourism. From the epic natural landscapes, generously peppered with organic farms, to the quaint towns boasting significant historical sights and mind-blowing galleries, it’s a place where people can revitalise their bodies, sooth their souls and ignite their imaginations. Tasmania should definitely be on more travellers’ radars.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
I’m not sure if I’ve enjoyed the best of the best, but, as a Queensland girl, it’s hard for me to go past Qualia. While every touch point is impeccable and the experience is an absolute dream, the staff are down-to-earth and authentic in their approach to customer service. I adore luxury hotels, which manage to create a sense of warmth and intimacy alongside their grandeur. I think Qualia’s contemporary marketing initiatives also help the resort maintain a stella reputation. It’s embraced the world of social media, and continues to leverage the power of digital celebrities to enhance the resort’s desirability. Qualia knows how to stay relevant and “sexy”.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
The influence of the Internet on travel is really thrilling. Practically every traveller posts their “holiday porn” online, enticing loved ones and complete strangers to experience the same blissful moments for themselves. Consumers have access to an ever-growing library of travel inspo, and they’re being influenced by the “Average Joe” (as opposed to rather traditional advertising) more than ever before. Travel bloggers and social media enthusiasts are helping smaller tourism operations find a voice and enjoy time in the limelight. As a result, aspiring travellers and holiday-markers are more open to off-the-beaten track destinations. In 2015, tourism is no longer all about popular and predictable bucket list experiences. Travellers love the idea of original adventures, which will provide unique photo opportunities and increase their social status online.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
Based on my conversations with foreign travellers, Melbourne is the buzz destination on their lips. This eclectic city has well and truly put itself on the international map, capturing the curiosity and interest of people from all corners of the globe. The world is very familiar with Sydney, which seems to be losing a bit of its aspirational glow. Melbourne offers a sense of mystery, diversity, creativity and grit, which is really “on trend”. It’s also constantly evolving and jam-packed with opportunities, making it a destination many foreigners would love to call home.

Anything you would like to add?
Having spent the past seven months travelling through Asia, I’ve witnessed how many countries (even those with challenging pasts) embrace their history and leverage it for tourism purposes. Most travellers relish the idea of stepping into the past and experiencing a country’s original culture. Australia’s pre-colonial Indigenous heritage is a source of wild fascination for many foreigners, and I think we need to offer more opportunities for them to discover how rich and beautiful it really is. Australia is more than a land of beautiful beaches, big cities and outback cattle stations.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
We feel the most underrated destination in Australia would have to be our hometown Western Australia. From riding camels along Cable Beach and diving with Whale Sharks at Ningaloo Reef to walking above the trees in the South West and drinking amazing wine in Margret River – we feel WA has it all!

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
We don’t stay in hotels often, rather we like to feel more like a local and stay in homes. Our favourite place we have stayed would be The Birches Denmark, a very luxurious self contained house located on Mt Shadforth just outside of Denmark in Western Australia. We slept in some of the biggest bedrooms we have ever been in, alongside picturesque farmland views with kangaroos hopping right outside our window.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
We feel a trend that is happening at the moment is the “self-travel agent”, where we have so many incredible websites and apps out there it is so easy to find the best deals out there to travel further and longer.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
We feel like Tasmania will be the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016. It has beautiful rainforests, white sandy beaches, amazing mountains for skiing – just such a range of things to see and do.

Juno Kim - Runaway JunoJuno Kim of Runaway Juno

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
I’m a lover of the outback. I’ve been there twice over the last two years, and I’m already planning to go back someday soon. The rural outback is where all the good things are hidden. Outback has been highlighted as tourism destination due to attraction like Ayers rock, but I think the real charm is in the towns and outback towners. The characters you meet out here is like straight out of a magazine, sharing amazing stories. I was lucky enough to travel in rural Outback Queensland for a week earlier this year, and it was a trip of a lifetime.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
I like independent local inn, like Quilpie Heritage Inn, or Hotel Corones in Charleville. They have such an interesting history, deep in the outback’s culture. It’s much more interesting than staying at a international chain hotels.

On the other spectrum, Peppers in Gold Coast is an amazing hotel. They filled the room with items that would make you feel like home. The view of the city from the top of the building is just spectacular.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
Women-focused, independent (or solo) trips. I’m glad more people are traveling on their own, regardless of their race, nationality, age, and gender. Travel is what taught me to be a grown up, and I hope more people have the opportunity.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
I’m seeing more attraction to Queensland and especially to the outback. At least I hope! As we are searching for something more unique and more off the beaten path, the outback is rising as the stop for those of who are seeking for something different.

Anything you would like to add?
Australia is a big country, and each state has its own charm. Don’t try to absorbe all at once. We can always go back.

Brooke has been travel blogging full time for nearly 3 years, travelled to 6 continents, 60-something countries, and doesn’t plan to stop any time soon!

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Tasmania! Of course I am biased being from Tasmania, but I think it has really started to surface as one of the “must see” destinations in Australia in the past year or so. It has won a lot of internationally recognised awards with the like of Travel + Leisure and Lonely Planet in the past couple of years so I think in 2015 it is really starting to cement itself as a must visit destination in Australia.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
I would have to say Saffire in Freycinet as I stayed here for the first time this year and it was undoubtedly one of my favourite hotel stays worldwide. It has been recognised as the world’s best boutique luxury hotel and with good reason!

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
I’m very excited by the amount of young people who are travelling and saving their hard earned money to buy experiences instead of things. This has been a core focus for me in my travel blog to encourage young people to get out there and see the world, so it is exciting to see such high growth rates and a cultural change towards travel in recent years.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
I think the Outback will always be one of the “hottest” (pun intended) destination in Australia and I’m really looking forward to visiting for the first time at the end of 2015. Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island are also getting a lot of press and are a great option for Aussies with a higher budget who are seeking uber luxe experiences without leaving the country.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Rainbow Beach, which is 3 hours drive north of Brisbane, nestled just underneath Fraser Island on Queensland’s coastline. This sleepy little town has some of the most beautiful beaches imaginable and is home to the Carlo Sand Blow, my favourite place in the world to watch the sun rise and set. It’s a place that captures your heart and stays with you forever.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
Spicers Peak Lodge, perched on a mountain top in Queensland’s Scenic Rim, is my pick. Waking up here means waking up in the heart of Australia’s bushland, surrounded by natural flora and fauna, with views that will take your breath away. Peak Lodge is incredibly luxurious, the rooms are gorgeous, the food is amazing and the staff are genuinely the most kind, attentive people you could hope to meet. It’s definitely a favourite of mine.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
For me, it’s being able to access first-hand information thanks to bloggers, Instagrammers and travel lovers. Before I visit a destination I jump on Instagram and check out the hashtag to see what’s happening, what the weather’s like, what people are doing or find a hidden spot to eat at, visit or photograph. It’s making travel easier to plan and giving people access to a wider range of things to do, specific to their interests.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
I really hope it’s somewhere in Queensland because I’m a Queensland girl born and bred and I’m so proud of how beautiful my home state is. I’d love to see a few of Queensland’s smaller towns get recognised, like Agnes Water in the Gladstone Region. There are so many hard working, passionate people in these smaller regions, working hard to promote their beautiful piece of the world.

Anything you would like to add?
It’s so wonderful to be included in this list of inspiring bloggers and I hope anyone who reads this feels inspired to follow their dreams too. I’m sure none of us on this list imagined we could be successful bloggers, so I hope it inspires others to see that anything in life is possible. Listen to your heart, follow your itchy travel feet and let your desires guide you.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Adelaide may be known as a food and wine destination within Australia, yet despite being included on a number of global travel lists it remains relatively unknown overseas, with most foreigners still making a beeline for Sydney and Melbourne. Yet as far as food and wine goes it’s one of Australia’s alluring cities with a handful of world class wine regions on its doorstep and outstanding restaurants like Orana, Hill of Grace, and Magil Estate. Then there’s the rich indigenous culture and art, the handsome heritage architecture, the gorgeous beaches, and the laid-back people.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
Australia does small and boutique best. We love small boutique retreats and luxury lodges, but it’s impossible to pick one! When it comes to hotels, we’re big fans of the Art Series properties, like The Watson in Adelaide, named after the great Australian Aboriginal artist Jimmy Watson, and their original Melbourne properties are superb. Southern Ocean Lodge, which we’ve been lucky to experience twice, is without doubt Australia’s most luxurious lodge – and we just stayed at Injidup Spa Retreat in the Margaret River, which has a similar feel and is also a stunner.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
As travellers we’ve long focused on slow, local and experiential travel, and they’re the forms of travel we concentrate on at Grantourismo. They’re been the big trends of recent years and we still find them the most exciting. I don’t think they’re going anywhere. It’s unfortunate that a lot of marketing people have jumped on the local travel bandwagon claiming to offer a ‘home away from home’, which is impossible for a thousand room resort to do and nor should they try. However, for us the idea of traveling to a place to learn to live like locals, get an insight into how locals live their lives, and connect with local people is still our main motivation for going somewhere, and those interactions are what makes travel meaningful and memorable for us.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
Adelaide and Canberra. The Aussie capital is doing very well to shake its image of being dull and boring. It’s always been home to some of Australia’s finest art and provided a space for some of the best touring exhibitions of art, however, like Adelaide, it’s food and wine scene is what will draw people to the city in 2016. A lot of people still don’t realise the city has some remarkable wineries in its backyard and its restaurants and bars are dishing up fantastic food and cocktails.

Anything you would like to add?
I’m hearing reports that Australians are travelling less and having second thoughts about travelling overseas, both due to the low Aussie dollar and fears of terrorism and violence — the recent incident in Egypt has frightened many travellers — however, the chances of dying in a road accident are still far higher. Our message to people is travel more in your own backyard, see more of Australia, but don’t stop travelling.

Caz and Craig Makepeace - YtravelCaz and Craig Makepeace of y travel blog

Caz and Craig Makepeace have just finished an 18 month road trip around Australia with their two daughters. Next stop USA.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Adelaide. It has the best food and wine in the country, with incredible places to visit only 30 minutes drive in every direction. Adelaide is still small enough as a city to not feel so overwhelmed and have a more connected experience. It has a friendly spirit and the festivals adds a real buzz to the air.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
I think it’s hard to beat the One&Only Hayman Island resort at the moment. It’s just had a huge refurb, you can arrive by luxury boat or helicopter and you have an island in the Whitsundays all to yourself. It’s a pretty special place.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
Going local! I love how travellers are keen to discover where the locals go and have more authentic experiences and unique stories to share.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
I’m noticing a lot more people taking an interest in heading West – Perth, Broome and Margaret River. If we can see better flight options in terms of price, I think WA will be hot!

Anything you would like to add
With the Aussie dollar so low, Australians will be way more content to explore more of their own backyard. Road trips will be adventure travellers are looking for.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Coolum, Queensland. It is Noosa’s chilled neighbour that a lot of people bypass in order to see the other Sunshine Coast hot spots like Mooloolaba or Australia Zoo. Coolum’s beaches are crowd free, waves are rolling in ready to surf and there are beautiful coastal walks along the headlands. Actually maybe I shouldn’t share this so I can still find somewhere to put my beach towel…

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
For six years I lived in paradise on Hayman Island so my answer will have to be a little biased because I can’t go past the One&Only Hayman Island. Having personally seen every inch of the landscape above and below the water surrounding the hotel and experiencing their luxe suites it’s seriously dreamy. The Great Barrier Reef is at the front door and a rainforest filled with wildlife and lush flora is out the back.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
I’ve seen a big change towards more rugged adventures. Getting away from cities and exploring destinations a little further afield to really escape everything and be surrounded by the natural environment. I’m all for this trend and think nothing beats a good dose of sea salt or mountain air.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
The Kimberley and northern coastal regions of WA. In staying with the theme of rugged adventures, the landscapes and remote countryside of the region allows for nights under the stars and days hiking to waterfalls or experiencing Australia in its truest form with hardly another sole in sight.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Mainland Whitsundays. Travellers know well the iconic beaches and resorts of The Whitsunday islands – however the mainland region is a destination in it’s own right. The bustling seaside town of Airlie Beach – gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the 74 islands in The Whitsunday group – offers a holiday with a relaxed vibe; from wildlife, private beaches, adventure, boating, kilometres of National Parks, and a developing foodie scene. The Whitsunday Coast airport is serviced by Virgin, Tiger and Jetstar – at just 2 hours flying time ex Sydney (1.5 hrs ex Brisbane) – you can be at home for breakfast and sitting at your resort pool in time for lunch.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
Still on theme with The Whitsundays, I nominate Qualia on Hamilton Island. For time poor ‘luxury seekers’, this resort hotel offers short break glamour in spades. A ‘child-free’ property providing a distinctly, understated Australian holiday experience. Service is king and the facilities match. Lounging in a private Pavilion, surrounded by bushland and overlooking azure waters, there cannot be a more tranquil place on earth.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
The notion that luxury comes in so many guises; the shift away from simply plonking in a resort to seeking out holiday experiences. Travellers are looking to tailor holidays – as we work harder and life moves faster – uncomplicated, relaxing and experiential holiday options are sort.

Retro stye holidays of old will resurface – with a difference. The majoirty of families do not want to simply swap one home for another, they actually need a break – seeking the opportunity to decompress and take absolute time out, for most not totally disconnecting (how else will we Instagram…). However the luxury of time spent outdoors, in naturally stunning locations, enjoying locally sourced cuisine, sitting and reading, star gazing, eating ice creams (or vanilla slices from local bakeries), playing board games and taking walks – in accommodation where someone else has made the bed and provided the groceries – boutique properties that offer full service will be the winners.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
Regional Australia, from coastal towns to country locations. The current state of the Australian dollar is going to encourage more of us to holiday domestically and boy do we have a lot to keep us busy – anywhere that provides the ‘retro-style’ luxury break mentioned above.

Anything you would like to add?
Australian’s are known for being excellent long haul travellers, however in our rush to see the rest of the world we might be guilty (myself included) of overlooking what the rest of the world already knows – we have it all on our doorstep. Our multi-culturally diverse population offers a truly international experience – at home.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Tasmania! Not enough Australian’s think to visit our island State. In fact, everyone needs to go, and soon. Lonely Planet recently named Tasmania as one of the world’s top regions to visit and no doubt it will be a very popular destination next year.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
I must have Tasmania on my mind… I think the best hotel in Australia is Pumphouse Point at Lake St Clair.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
Wilderness travel. Everyone wants to go hiking and explore untouched, lesser known wilderness spots on their holidays.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
Lord Howe Island!

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Loch Ard Gorge. Many flock to see the 12 apostles missing this natural beauty right around the corner and with an amazing heroic story to boot, it needs to be added to the must-visit destinations.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
Impossible choice, however the Somerset in Melbourne is fabulous location and very family friendly.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
There has been a great move towards travel with a purpose. People have been more mindful of their environment and the impact of their travel from tourism to nature and wildlife.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
I think Western Australia is really stepping up for tourism and will be the spot to go in the very near future for its beaches, it’s wineries, it’s surfing and it’s food.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
There are truly amazing places in Australia and plenty of which deserve a bit more attention. However, to us, Fraser Island has got to be one destination that is the most underrated in 2015.
This destination which is one of the largest sandy islands of Australia, is a relaxation haven, both for local and international tourists alike. 4 Wheel drive fantasy playground, fishing and camping, luxurious beach house chillaxing and swimming in pristine blue coloured lakes are just a few wonders of this place.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
As a family we absolutely love Sea World Resort, which is a great base for exploring Gold Coast, together with family fun at Sea World and Movie World Theme Park. Here our kids are thoroughly entertained for days, with various rides, playgrounds and spectacular dolphin and seal shows.
As for parent-only getaways, Treetops Seaview at Montville is the most romantic tucked away on the side of a mountain gorgeous hut. Total relaxation sitting in a jacuzzi, glass of bubbly in hand, wood fire crackling whilst overlooking the panoramic views that stretches all the way from the Hinterland to the ocean.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
Truly the most exciting trend in travel is to take a journey to discover the authentic cultures around the world. To really see and immerse yourself in the food, the lifestyle and the culture of the country is the most authentic and exhilarating experience that one can have. To go beyond the TV screen and a magazine article and to learn, feel, smell and taste is the key.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
The big red rock in the centre of Australia, the mighty Uluru or Ayers Rock. We think that our technology driven society is more and more in search of remote locations that take them ‘off the grid’, all in an aid of some time for peacefulness and rediscovery of themselves. And what better way than to rediscover the roots of it all, go to the heart of Australia and be absorbed into the red lands of Aboriginal culture.

Anything you would like to add?
Travelling to us is the greatest way to learn about the world that we live in and we believe it to be the best educational adventure for our children. It gives you so many gifts, gifts that simply cannot be wrapped up in a box. Gifts of experiences and appreciation and memories that will last you a lifetime.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Cape Tribulation / Port Douglas – it’s not the most underrated destination but it’s often overlooked as people head to the more popular neighbour, Cairns, to see the Great Barrier Reef. Australia has a comparatively young history compared to say, Europe. But the trees of Daintree Rainforest go back hundreds of millions of years ago! Tropical North Queensland really has such lush rainforests and such a diverse wildlife that is well kept.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
The Jamala Wildlife Lodge in Canberra has really been a game changer this year. I believe it’s the first of its kind in Australia. African-inspired luxury lodges where you literally sleep with lions, giraffes, cheetahs and bears. Perfect mix of luxury and adventure!

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
Luxury travellers are focusing more on experiential travel nowadays so it’s exciting to see hotel brands incorporate local and unique experiences to provide a seamless service to guests. Gone are the days when all that mattered to luxury travellers are thread count and butler service. This is really something I look forward to as my travel style is combining luxury with adventure / experience.
In the Airline industry, it’s a great time to witness the ‘battle of first classes’. Flying apartments, spas, personal butlers and chefs, the golden age of flying is well and truly back with a bang..with a capital Bling!

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
I predict Tasmania will receive a surge of more than its usual number of tourists in 2016. A number of luxury and wilderness retreat-type accommodations have opened up in the last 2 years which complements the state’s amazing natural surroundings (Cradle Mountain, Freycinet National Park, etc). This is great news as it means Tasmania won’t be quite as isolated from the rest of mainland Australia and will be visited by people who’ve only heard about how wonderful it is down there, myself included!

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Highly underrated are those beautiful local treasures where we may have holidayed as children. They’re often only a few hours’ drive away, yet as adults we tend to head further afield. We are loving introducing our kids to such gorgeous spots as Warrnambool and Bright in Victoria and Jervis Bay and Kiama in NSW.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
Quay West Suites Sydney is perfection for families – harbour views; amazing indoor swimming pool that the kids adore; high-rise recreation deck perfect for soaking up said views; spacious apartments (with kitchen and laundry facilities), and The Rocks, my favourite part of Sydney, on your doorstep. Get on the harbour with a ferry trip to Watsons Bay, up your culture quota with a wander around the Museum of Contemporary Art, play tea parties at The Tea Cosy and grab a burger at the historic yet vibrant Harts Pub.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
Japan is massively popular with Australian families right now! They’re going for the snow, the culture, the natural beauty and the food. As well as for Tokyo Disney Resort and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It is so close to Australia and in the same time zone (no jet lag!), safe and clean, yet with a completely different language and culture. We can’t wait to go!

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
With the current weak Australian dollar, many families will be keen to travel domestically, yet explore somewhere new. These families won’t be sitting around a resort, they will be sailing the Whitsundays, pottering around Tasmania or soaking up some of South Australia’s highlights, like the Barossa, Flinders Ranges and dreamy Kangaroo Island.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Currumbin at the Gold Coast is one of the most beautiful places on earth. People flock to the over-crowded beaches and built-up tourist trap of Surfers Paradise when just down the road there are magical swimming holes, expansive forests and pristine beaches in explore.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
Spicers Sangoma Retreat in the Blue Mountains strikes the perfect balance of cosy charm and sleek elegance. Surrounded by natural beauty as far as the eye can see, this upcoming hotel is ideal for a getaway at any time of the year.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
I think people are starting to seek out more genuine cultural experiences when they travel rather than just looking for creature comforts. This means that places reflecting local culture in their decor, food, activities and overall atmosphere are becoming more popular than generic, modern hotels.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
Tasmania has been on the rise for awhile and I think 2016 is going to be the year to visit. Slowly people are discovering just how beautiful and naturally diverse this island is and it’s starting to attract more and more tourism as a result.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
Tasmania. Hands down. It may be the worst kept secret in the world after making this year’s Lonely Planet Top 10 list but the apple isle still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. You don’t have to wait until retirement age to enjoy the fruits Tassie has to offer! The scenery is spectacular, it’s heaven for foodies and a goldmine for grape lovers. Need more inspiration? How about Hobart’s spectacular Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Cradle Mountain, the Bay of Fires or in fact the entire east coast of the state… Explore Tasmania. Full stop.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
Looking out to the Whitsunday Islands from its perch on Hamilton Island, it’s hard to go past Qualia. There may have been a battle royale brewing off Queensland’s coast when One&Only Hayman Island reopened nearby but as far as I’m concerned, Qualia still takes the cake. A secluded sanctuary on the Great Barrier Reef, it feels just like you’re floating on your very own tropical island! That said if you’re planning a city break in my hometown, Melbourne’s Crown Towers Hotel is pretty exceptional as well.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
The digital revolution has completely changed how people plan, research, book and experience travel; with that in mind, we’ve jumped into an exciting era where online influencers like travel or fashion bloggers are really starting to dominate. Packing their bags and ferrying them away to far away places, the best bloggers give their readers a glimpse into another world and we can’t seem to get enough of it. Whether they’re posting snaps of their Tuscan villa on Instagram or dishing up destination guides on their website, today’s bloggers are knowledgable, relevant and realistically inspiring others to travel with their personal flair and joie de vivre.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
Go west. South of Perth, in the South West corner of the country there’s a treasure trove of beaches, wineries, trendy eateries, surf spots and secluded sanctuaries that don’t get the accolades they deserve. To Margaret River and beyond I say. Maybe it’s just me but we’ve all been sticking to the east coast of the country for far too long.

What’s the most underrated destination in Australia in 2015?
I’m not exactly sure about just 2015, but the Pilbara region in north Western Australia has always been underrated in my opinion. The stunning gorges, bright colours and miles of quiet make for an incredible excursion into a relatively undiscovered and ancient part of the world.

In your opinion, what is the best hotel in Australia in 2015 and why?
I’m not sure if the Castle on the Hill exactly qualifies as a hotel, as it’s a novel getaway with only two rooms. However, it’s one of the more enjoyable places I’ve stayed in in recent memory, due to the wonderful hosts, locally built Renaissance architecture and mystery that buzzes within. Well worth checking out in Uki in the Northern Rivers, NSW.

What’s the most exciting trend in travel at the moment and why?
Since this is not my forte, I’ll say travel blogs, selfie sticks and the short back and sides haircut accompanied by a reasonably unkempt beard.

What is your prediction for the hottest travel destination in Australia in 2016?
While Tasmania was a popular spot in 2015, I think we’ll continue to see this wonderful little island gain more visitors well into 2016. With a superb food culture and jaw-dropping scenery, Tassie is becoming more and more targeted in the travel scene (and for good reason). In fact, as soon as I get back from my current trip in Spain, I plan to spend quite a bit of time there.
